SENIOR ONE GEOGRAPHY
Explore your surroundings. Understand places. Discover how people and the environment are connected.
Dear Learner
Welcome to Senior One Geography.
Geography is an exciting subject because it helps you understand the world in which you live. You will study places, people, land, water, weather, climate, maps and the ways people interact with their environment.
You will begin with things that are familiar to you — your school, home, community and local environment — and gradually develop the skills needed to understand Uganda, East Africa and other parts of the world.
A Question to Think About
How does the environment affect people, and how do people affect the environment?
This question will appear in many different forms throughout your study of Geography.
What is Geography?
Geography is the study of people, places and environments and the relationships between them.
It helps us understand both the natural world and the human activities taking place within it.
Physical Environment
Natural features such as mountains, rivers, soils, rocks, weather, climate and vegetation.
Human Environment
Features and activities created or influenced by people, such as settlements, roads, farms, schools and towns.
Why Do We Study Geography?
Geography helps us understand the world around us and make better decisions about how we use it.
Through Geography, you will learn to understand:
- the places where people live;
- natural and human features in the environment;
- how people depend on land, water and other resources;
- how weather and climate affect human activities;
- how maps help us locate and understand places;
- how human activities change the environment;
- how resources can be used responsibly;
- why caring for the environment is important.
You Will Learn Geography by Doing
This is a Competence-Based Curriculum. That means you will not only memorise geographical facts. You will learn how to use geographical knowledge and skills in practical situations.
Look carefully at places, features, photographs and the environment.
Ask questions, collect information and find geographical evidence.
Draw, read and interpret maps to understand places.
Use scale, distance, weather instruments, graphs and statistics.
Give reasons for geographical patterns and processes.
Suggest practical responses to geographical and environmental challenges.
Geography Is About the Real World
Some Geography learning will happen outside the classroom. You may observe places around your school or community, collect information, take measurements, make sketches and record what you see.
You may investigate things such as:
- roads and paths;
- buildings and settlements;
- slopes and landforms;
- streams and drainage;
- vegetation;
- weather;
- land use;
- human activities.
Tools You Will Use
A geographer uses different tools to investigate and communicate information. During this course, you will work with tools such as:
- maps
- atlases
- globes
- compasses
- photographs
- aerial images
- graphs
- charts
- statistics
- weather instruments
- field sketches
- digital maps
Skills You Will Develop
Geography will help you develop skills that are useful both at school and in everyday life.
Study evidence carefully and make sensible conclusions.
Explain geographical ideas clearly in speech, writing, maps and diagrams.
Identify geographical problems and suggest practical solutions.
Work effectively with other learners during investigations.
Use measurement, scale, statistics, graphs and calculations.
Use technology to research, map, record and present geographical information.
How Will You Show What You Have Learned?
You will show your understanding in different ways. It will not always be through written questions.
Doing
Fieldwork, mapping, measuring, observing and practical activities.
Explaining
Answering questions, discussing ideas and explaining geographical relationships.
Creating
Maps, graphs, diagrams, reports, sketches, models and presentations.
Caring for Our Environment
As you study Geography, you will discover that people depend on the environment for water, food, land, building materials, transport routes and many other resources.
You will therefore be encouraged to think carefully about how people can use resources without destroying the environment for future generations.
How to Learn Well on KAWA
